Polystyrene is among the least plastic materials in the seas.
International research conducted by the Danish Ministry of the Environment confirms this: although it is visible, polystyrene accounts for less than 1 per cent of marine litter by weight.
As the study points out:
"The data clearly show that EPS is not a major contributor to underwater pollution. It is necessary to change the measurement paradigm: do not simply count objects, but evaluate their actual contribution by weight."
Thanks to its lightness, buoyancy and traceability, polystyrene is easily recoverable and stands out for being 100% recyclable, non-toxic and manageable throughout the supply chain, fundamental characteristics that make it a responsible choice for both protective packaging and sustainable architecture.
